On Friday, Nov. 30, as a member of a local book club, I had the pleasure along with the other members of the club to hear Evelyne Tannehill address us at a luncheon at Quail Creek. Ms. Tannehill is the author of the book “Abandoned and Forgotten.” It is the story of her life as a child of eight to be in Germany during World War II. She lived under German rule, Polish role and finally Russian rule. Her book is one that was hard to put down once you started. When we recall World War II, we think of air raid drills, flags of red, white and blue with a gold star in the center for those who lost loved ones during the war. I never gave any thought to the German people who suffered and what they had to endure. It took Ms. Tannehill six years to complete this book and a few trips back to Germany to recall some of the events and hardships she endured. Her book is one that I would reread in the future again along with many others of this caliber that I have read. I don’t think people in Green Valley are aware this author lives amongst us in the winter months and she has written a wonderful, sad story and shared it with us. I believe the book is available at the library and can also be purchased at the Green Valley Book Store. My book club members who were at the luncheon, asked me to write this letter to bring this lady to the attention of other residents of Green Valley who enjoy good reading and lesson in history.
